BYOK Explained: Stop Paying Twice for AI You Already Own

6 min read · Inthread

Short answer

BYOK — "bring your own key" — means an app lets you plug in your own AI provider API key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or xAI) instead of charging you a separate subscription. You pay the provider directly for exactly what you use, with no markup, and your requests stay between you and the model maker. Inthread is built on BYOK because charging you again for AI you already own is the one thing we refuse to do.

If you pay $20–$30 a month for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, or Gemini Advanced, you're sitting on API access you're barely using. Most AI apps ignore that and bill you a second time for the privilege of using the same models in their wrapper. BYOK is the refusal to do that. It's less a feature than a stance.

What does BYOK (bring your own key) mean?

An API key is a private credential from an AI provider that lets an app make requests to that provider's models on your behalf. With BYOK, instead of the app reselling you access through its own account, you paste in your key. The app becomes a clean interface; the billing relationship stays directly between you and Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or xAI. You pay per-use API pricing for what you actually consume — nothing more.

Is BYOK cheaper?

For typical texting use, usually yes. API pricing bills by tokens — roughly, the amount of text in and out — so drafting replies, translating, and summarizing threads costs cents, not a flat monthly fee on top of subscriptions you already hold. Heavy, all-day automated use can change the math, but for the way most people use an AI keyboard inside iMessage, paying only for what you use comes out ahead of a second subscription.

The pricing philosophy, said plainly: we won't mark up your API key. You already bought access to these models — our job is to put them where you text, not to charge a toll on something you own.

Is BYOK more private?

It can be. Because requests go straight from the app to the provider using your own key, there's no middleman account collecting and storing your prompts to resell access. You keep a direct relationship with the model maker and their data terms apply to you directly. For messages — often personal, sometimes sensitive — that directness matters.

How BYOK works in Inthread

Setup is a one-time step, then it's invisible:

  1. Get an API key from the providers you want — Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for GPT-4o, Google for Gemini, xAI for Grok
  2. Paste each key into Inthread once
  3. Open any iMessage thread and start using AI from the keyboard
  4. Switch models per message; you're billed by each provider for only what you use

This is also why Inthread can be genuinely multi-model: with your own keys, adding a provider is just adding a key, not negotiating a new bundle. It's the structural reason the app can stay cheap and give you real model choice at the same time — including on your Apple Watch.

Who is BYOK best for?

Anyone already paying for at least one AI tool — founders, agency operators, AI power users, developers — who would rather not pay a second markup to use those same models where they actually work. If you've ever thought "why am I paying for Claude and ChatGPT and a wrapper app on top," BYOK is the answer.

Frequently asked questions

What does BYOK mean?

Bring-your-own-key: you connect your own AI provider API key to an app instead of paying it a separate subscription, so you pay the provider directly with no markup.

Is BYOK cheaper than a normal AI subscription?

For light-to-moderate use it usually is, because you pay per-token API pricing for exactly what you use rather than a fixed monthly markup.

Is BYOK secure?

Your key authorizes requests directly to the provider. Keep the key private, and you retain a direct relationship with the model maker rather than routing through a middleman.

Which providers does Inthread support?

Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (GPT-4o), Google (Gemini), and xAI (Grok) — bring a key for any or all of them.
